Properties of Fiberglass cloth

fiberglass clothWoven fiberglass cloth offers the widest range and the best control over thickness, weight and strength of all forms of fiberglass textiles. This offers the materials engineer a wide choice of controlled fabric properties to satisfy design needs and objectives. In general, woven fiberglass cloth has the following properties:

High Tensile Strength:
Fiberglass cloth is one of the strongest textile fibers, having greater specific tensile strength than steel wire of the same diameter, at a lower weight.

Dimensional Stability:
Fiberglass cloth has low elongation under load, generally 3% or less. Glass fibers produce fabrics with excellent dimensional stability under various types of conditions.

High Heat Resistance:
Fiberglass cloth has excellent heat resistance at relatively low cost. Fiberglass cloth retains approximately 50% of room temperature tensile strength at 700°F (371°C); approximately 25% at 900°F (482°C); with a softening point of 1555°F (846°C) and a melting point of 2075° F (1121 °C).

Fire Resistance:
Fiberglass cloth is composed of inorganic materials, and are noncombustible, a natural choice where flammability is of concern.

Good Thermal Conductivity:

The rapid heat dissipation of fiberglass cloth is particularly important in electrical insulation applications.

Good Chemical Resistance:
Like glass itself, fiberglass cloth is highly resistant to attack by most chemicals.

Outstanding Electrical Properties:
Fiberglass fabric withstands high temperature and has low moisture regain. Along with its high dielectric strength and low dielectric constant, glass is of major importance and usefulness in the electronics.

Durability:
Being inert, fiberglass cloth is unaffected by sunlight, fungus or bacteria.

Economical:
Fiberglass cloth is lower in cost than many other fabrics for similar applications.

Fiberglass cloth is utilized in many industries for a wide range of applications such as:

  • fiberglass clothInsulation – Our fiberglass cloth for insulation applications is utilized in removable flange and valve covers, navy board facing, pipe lagging, heat shields and expansion joints. Our fiberglass cloth is made from 100% fiberglass yarns and provides superior thermal and acoustical insulation.
  • Marine and Recreational – BGF's fiberglass cloth for marine and recreational products are utilized in surfboards, water craft and snowmobiles, boat and tooling. Fiberglass cloth provides exceptional strength and durability when layered with a resin to form a hardened composite structure such as a surfboard or snowmobile.
  • Advanced Composites – Fiberglass cloth for the Advanced Composites industry is made from E glass and S glass fibers. E glass consists of electrical grade glass fibers and S glass is comprised of high strength glass fibers. Each fiber offers its own unique advantages when engineered into woven fiberglass cloth, thus allowing the highest performance possible from the end product. Some of the applications for fiberglass cloth in advanced composites include: aircraft interiors, primary and secondary structures, ducting, windmill blades, helicopter rotor blades, radomes, and brake linings. Most of the fiberglass cloth in our advanced composites line meets or exceeds the stringent requirements of the advanced composites industry as well as US military specifications.
  • Electronics – BGF's fiberglass cloth is used in printed circuit boards and multi-layer circuit boards for their superior thermal conductivity properties. Fiberglass cloth is an excellent insulator for electronic circuit boards giving strength to the laminate and resistance to heat and moisture. Along with its high dielectric strength and low dielectric constant, fiberglass cloth for electronics are extremely useful and necessary.
  • Filtration – Our fiberglass cloth is increasingly utilized by the filtration industry. As government environmental regulations become more and more restrictive, the efficiency of particulate collection becomes an even more important consideration for utilities, asphalt and carbon black producers and refineries. Our fiberglass cloth is the mechanism for meeting these regulations. Fiberglass cloth for filtration is the optimum solution for environments with operating temperatures between 300º and 550º F. The high temperature and chemical resistance properties of our fiberglass cloth make it the best solution for the rigorous demands of the filtration industry.   • Commercial & Construction – Fiberglass cloth is utilized in many specialty applications in the Construction and Commercial industries. Fiberglass cloth is used to reinforce concrete, support composite bridge structures, used in conveyor belts, tubing, pipes, and roofing scrims. Our fiberglass cloth is also used for acoustical facing for ceiling tile, film reinforcement for movie screens, window shades & vertical blinds, carpet backing, and smoke & fire curtains. BGF's fiberglass cloth provides excellent fire resistance and meets the stringent fire codes for most commercial buildings.   • Protective – BGF's fiberglass cloth for protection is utilized to a great degree by the US Military. Our high strength “S Glass” fiberglass cloth provides armor for military humvees, helmets, jeeps, and decking for aircraft carriers. When the US Military has a requirement for fiberglass cloth to protect our soldiers, they call BGF.
