Industry Pioneer Dies

GREENSBORO, NC ( June 22, 2011) Mr. Robert Porcher, Chief Executive and primary owner of the Porcher Group of Badinieres, France, passed away Monday, June 20. He was 83.
In 1948, at the age of 20, Robert took over management of a small textile company which had been founded by his father. That began a storied and successful career spanning 63 years during which Robert turned his father’s small company into a global textile enterprise with operations in 5 countries on 4 continents. One of these operations is Greensboro-based BGF Industries, the American Glass Division of Porcher Industries. BGF employs 787 people in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia and 60 at its Corporate Headquarters in Greensboro. Today, Porcher Industries is a leading producer of fiberglass, aramid, and carbon fabric substrates and related products for many high performance and industrial markets.
Born from humble beginnings on April 24, 1928 to Remy and Cecile Porcher, Robert will be remembered as a skilled strategist, a gifted visionary, and a formidable entrepreneur. He was also known as a gracious and caring gentleman who always took time to say bonjour and offer encouraging words to his employees. Because of his energy, knowledge, and love of the business, Mr. Porcher was an inspiration to all who knew him and was involved in the business until his passing.
He is survived by his wife, Claire of 59 years and his son Philippe, CEO of BGF Industries.
